The Watch RPG

Created by Andrew Medeiros

The Watch is a tabletop roleplaying game set in a "light fantasy" setting known as The Clanlands. It takes place during a dark and horrific war between the now-united ten clans who live there and an invading force, known only as The Shadow. The Shadow is a powerful and insidious enemy that is able to enter the minds of its opponents and slowly turn them to its side; twisting them into unnatural foes. For reasons unknown, The Shadow is able to more easily influence the minds of men, and has turned a great deal of the clan's soldiers against itself. With most of its fighting force crippled or worse, the clans have joined together and begun enlisting new warriors to defend their homes. Women and non-binary femme people who seem better able to resist The Shadow's hold have been recruited, trained, promoted, and formed into a new order: The Watch. In The Watch, you'll play a group of elite soldiers who are called upon time and time again to defend villages, attack The Shadow's forces at key locations, scout the enemy's lines, and much more. Each mission comes with its fair share of costs and compromises and you'll need to navigate them in order to be ready to heed the next call to action.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

All book files have been approved!
over 6 years ago – Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 06:17:04 PM

Exciting news! We've approved all of the book files and money will be en route to our printers by the end of the day, which means the next step is making the actual books.

Of course, this stage still involves an awful lot of hurry up and wait. The books have to get produced, then shipped to our fulfilment contractor. Also, we're waiting for the last few pieces of art for the NPC deck (Claudia has been an absolute trooper getting through the sheer volume of pieces we commissioned) to get the decks made, so our two timelines for decks and books might not quite line up - but that's how publishing goes.

But! Things are moving forward!

Shhhhh! I don't want to jinx it, but...
over 6 years ago – Tue, Aug 15, 2017 at 11:46:52 PM

I can't believe it, but the book is finally nearing completion! A few days ago, I sent the finished index to our layout person (one of the last steps in layout). Today, Claudia sent over the hi-res illustration files for the illustration and the cover, and our layout person is going to put all of that together into the really-actually-final file that will go to press, assuming that there aren't any major fixes that need to be made.

So. You know, don't tell anyone, since I'd hate to jinx things, but it looks like we're actually ahead of schedule for when we were planning on going to press! Which is pretty darn exciting.

Meanwhile, Claudia is working on finishing illustrations for the NPC deck; many of you who backed at the portrait level have heard from Andrew about approval on sketches (if you haven't, you will soon!). I've been really excited to see what Claudia has been coming up with for these NPC portraits - the companion deck is going to be really amazing thanks to all of her hard work.

Lastly, I'm off to GenCon in under 48 hours, where I'll be running the crap out of The Watch at Games on Demand. My GMing schedule is here, if you'd like to drop by and say hello.

Cover preview!
almost 7 years ago – Mon, Jul 17, 2017 at 10:07:15 PM

Hello, folks! It's been a few weeks, so I wanted to send out an update just to say that things are still happening. RPG publishing is a lot of hurry up and wait, but the wait is going to be worth it, because the art Claudia has been doing is SO SO GOOD.

She just sent us the finished cover art and I'm so excited I CAN'T EVEN.

 BRB screaming in excitement forever.

BackerKit surveys, GenCon, and an art preview
almost 7 years ago – Tue, Jun 20, 2017 at 04:59:03 PM

Hello, folks! Just touching base to talk about what's going on behind the scenes.

First: BackerKit surveys

Because the book is still waiting for illustration and layout, we haven't been super aggressive about reminders, but that is probably going to change if you're one of our backers who have yet to fill out a survey. 43 of you have yet to finish a survey, and we really need you to fill one out so that we can organize fulfillment quickly and smoothly once the time comes!

Reminder emails have been sent to those folks, so please fill out the survey if you don't want to get more emails.

Second: GenCon!

I'll be organizing again at Games on Demand this year, with plans on running a whole lot of The Watch. If you want to try to join in one of my games or to catch me to chat about the game, or really anything else, Games on Demand is where you'll find me for pretty much the whole convention!

Third: Art Preview

Reason number 301 why we love working with Claudia - she just gets us. Take, for example, this piece where we asked for a sorceress hovering over a bunch of grotesques while working some dark magic. What she gave us was this nightmare fuel:

See? Nightmare fuel. Like, Claudia reached into our brains and pulled out something deeply unsettling, in the best possible way. I'm so excited for how this book is going to look!
