The Watch RPG

Created by Andrew Medeiros

The Watch is a tabletop roleplaying game set in a "light fantasy" setting known as The Clanlands. It takes place during a dark and horrific war between the now-united ten clans who live there and an invading force, known only as The Shadow. The Shadow is a powerful and insidious enemy that is able to enter the minds of its opponents and slowly turn them to its side; twisting them into unnatural foes. For reasons unknown, The Shadow is able to more easily influence the minds of men, and has turned a great deal of the clan's soldiers against itself. With most of its fighting force crippled or worse, the clans have joined together and begun enlisting new warriors to defend their homes. Women and non-binary femme people who seem better able to resist The Shadow's hold have been recruited, trained, promoted, and formed into a new order: The Watch. In The Watch, you'll play a group of elite soldiers who are called upon time and time again to defend villages, attack The Shadow's forces at key locations, scout the enemy's lines, and much more. Each mission comes with its fair share of costs and compromises and you'll need to navigate them in order to be ready to heed the next call to action.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

New game about HAPPY queer stories - now on KickStarter
about 3 years ago – Mon, Feb 15, 2021 at 05:52:53 PM

Hello to everyone who backed and supported The Watch! This campaign was the start of a wild journey that made The Watch so much more successful than I ever could have dreamed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support and enthusiasm that The Watch has continued to receive these last four years.

It's been a challenging time for everybody, so I'm happy to be able to tell you about Our Traveling Home - my new project which is currently on Kickstarter and is all about telling the happy queer stories we need in this pandemic.

Our Traveling Home is a game about queer romance, found family, and finding healing through belonging, as inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli, and particularly Howl's Moving Castle. The game is about a collection of oddballs and misfits trying to make their new chosen family work in the face of opposition from the Outside World, but there is always a happy ending! The queer romance resolves happily, and everyone in the family gets to have a happily ever after.

This game isn't just for queer people, though. Just like The Watch, it's written for people from any background to play and enjoy!

The campaign is currently running on Kickstarter through March 10th. If you loved the art in The Watch, you're absolutely going to love the work that Claudia is going to make for Our Traveling Home. I very much hope that you'll consider joining me on this new campaign to bring a little light into 2021.

Take care and stay safe. Together, we'll get through this.

Final Update
over 6 years ago – Mon, Dec 04, 2017 at 10:34:30 PM

Well, folks! All of the backer packages have been mailed. Most of you Americans should have them already, even if us Canadians are still waiting. (Curse you Canada post!) If you don't get your package in the next several weeks or so, though, do drop us a line and we'll make sure you get a copy.

Even better, books and Companion NPC decks are now available for sale through IPR - just in time for holiday giving. You can also purchase PDFs through IPR, although if you're someone who prefers to purchase PDFs through DriveThru, we'll have the PDF on Drive Thru by the end of the week.

That means that we're officially done! It's been a long, crazy ride, but it's finally over. Our sincere, heartfelt thanks to all of you for making this project possible, and to everyone else who helped make this game what it is.

Updated Play Materials
over 6 years ago – Fri, Nov 17, 2017 at 06:14:32 PM

Hi, folks! It was pointed out on Google+ that there was a discrepancy between our play materials and the text of the book; we had missed a piece that we had decided to remove from the rules.

We got our layout person to modify the play materials; here's the link to the updated materials.

Also: shipping status

Shipments are very close to being done - several backers in the US have already gotten their books, and they look great! We'll advise when shipments have been completed, and people can expect books to arrive within the next several weeks.

Status update: Shipments happening soon!
over 6 years ago – Thu, Oct 19, 2017 at 01:14:27 PM

Hey, folks!

We got an exciting update from our fulfilment agent last night. They received the hard and softcover books from our printer last week, and while it takes a while to organize and pack shipments for 645 books, they're getting close to being done and will be ready to start sending out shipments soon.

Unfortunately, those of you who ordered Companion Decks will be facing a small delay. There was a hiccup in the last bit of art production, which caused the art to fall behind the production of the books a bit. (Not Claudia's fault - the amount of art we commissioned from her was huge and she was a trooper getting through more than forty pieces as quickly as she did.) While we were waiting for the art, we also had to address a design problem that was revealed through testing at FanExpo and elsewhere that reduced readability of the cards at the table. So Drew redesigned the cards and ordered a new prototype so we could verify that we got things right this time.

New decks are being ordered to be sent to our fulfilment agent, who will send out books and decks to those of you who ordered both once the decks arrive at their warehouse. It means our Companion Deck backers will be waiting a few extra days for their packages, and we apologize for that! However, it gets tricky managing timelines when key production personnel are located in three different countries on two different continents, and we figured a few extra days was worth making sure that our Companion Deck backers got the highest quality product for their money. I might be biased, but I think you'll be happy we took the time to get it right - Claudia absolutely KILLED IT with the art, and Drew did a great job making the cards readable and attractive. Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on a deck of my own!

Lastly, a quick reminder that we have a community on Google+, if you want to talk about the game or see photos of it out in the wild! The inimitable Bryanna Hitchcock posted photos and an EPIC actual play of her session at Big Bad Con, which was hugely exciting and gratifying to see! Drew and I are looking forward to being able to see more such reports in the near future!
